Happy New Year! My first post of 2018 is dedicated to taking better care of your skin. Since I turned 30 last November, my skincare routine has been extra high maintenance, which is saying a lot for a lazy girl like me, but it’s all worth it because I have much better skin now than I did in my early twenties. Not even kidding.
So, aside from following the obvious skincare habits like wearing sunscreen every day, drinking lots of water (seriously so important), and washing your face before bed, here are some really easy tips to get clearer, smoother, and firmer skin this year.
1. Use a jade roller.
Make 2018 the year you start facial massaging. I first read about jade rollers through the The Skinny Confidential (who else is a fan?) so naturally, I had to try it. Sure enough the results are worth it. After using your nighttime serums and moisturizers, apply gentle pressure on your face and neck and roll in upward and outward strokes (see my insta video) to help improve skin circulation and elasticity, reduce fine lines and de-puff eyes. I keep mine in the freezer for a cool, brightening effect on my skin. When choosing a jade roller, opt for one made with 100% natural jade. I use this one.
2. Swap your ordinary pillowcase for a luxurious silk pillowcase.
Pillowcases probably don’t come to mind when you think of skincare, but it should. If you sleep on your face or on your side (who else cannot sleep on their back?!), you’re subjecting your face to creases and premature aging. I finally invested in a silk pillowcase and not only does it feel amazing, but now I no longer wake up with creases across my cheeks and accentuated smile lines. Beauty sleep is a real thing, guys.
3. Add a face oil to your skincare routine.
Face oils are a game changer, especially during the winter months when your skin needs more hydration. If you’ve been reading my blog for a while you know I am a huge fan of the Boscia Tsubaki Beauty Oil for clearing blemishes and waking up with glowing skin (I have oily skin, FYI). I also love this budget-friendly and all-natural Chia Seed Face Oil, which contains omega-3 fatty acids and helps unclog pores and prevent breakouts. I would recommend using the jade roller after applying your face oil to help it better absorb into your skin.
4. Use a makeup remover balm or gel.
Gone are the days of using makeup remover wipes that irritate your skin and don’t remove every trace of mascara. Get yourself a cleansing balm or gel instead and use it before your facial cleanser. My favorite one lately is by Korean skincare brand Erborian; it removes even the most stubborn waterproof mascara. I also love this makeup remover balm by Farmacy and this cleansing oil by Boscia.
5. Take collagen supplements.
I started taking collagen supplements last summer after tape extensions left my hair thin and damaged, and I noticed my skin looked firmer and smoother, as a result (also, my hair and nails grew like crazy!). As we get older, we produce less collagen so supplements are essential for maintaining healthy complexion. I take these gummy collagen supplements every day.
