Over the weekend I started reading Aliza Licht’s Leave Your Mark, an engaging mentorship book for anyone with #GIRLBOSS aspirations (even if you’re not looking to break into fashion this is a must-read). The cover’s eye-catching illustration of lipstick marks on a coffee cup is a clever pun on the title and symbolizes Aliza’s signature fiery red lip. Lipstick – or lack thereof – can be just as much a part of your personal brand as your wardrobe, but choosing the right color requires some trial and error. And while I don’t have one signature lipstick, there are certain colors I gravitate to every season: spring is for soft pinks and nudes; summer is best for hot pink and bright orange; fall and winter call for red, berry, and plum.
I recently got to sample Butter London’s colorful line of creamy lip crayons (courtesy of the brand) and found myself stepping outside my seasonal beauty comfort zone to try darker, bolder hues. I love Butter London’s nail polishes, which are free of formaldehyde, so it came as no surprise that I’m loving the lip crayons. They have the hydration of a balm, the longevity of a lip stain, and the radiant shine of a gloss without the stickiness. And for us lazy people, there’s a built-in sharpener so you can outline your lips on the go (no lipliner needed). Best of all the color lasts all day, literally, so can go ahead and eat that apple. If I had to choose my signature shade, I’d go with Ladybird, a fiery orangey-red hue that evokes power, ambition, and sass (sounds just like Aliza!). My second favorite would be Primrose Hill Picnic, a bright pink that you can’t help but feel happy wearing. Disco Biscuit is another favorite that goes nicely with a smokey eye. Scroll through for my favorite colors and let me know your favorite(s) in the comments.
