Charlotte Ronson’s fall 2014 collection is a clever concoction of ’70s bohemia and ’90s grunge (think Courtney Love) with romantic undertones. The clothes bridge the divide between west and east, feeling very Los Angeles, but sartorially fitting for a night in the East Village or Williamsburg. Velvet, crepe, and leather were the primary textures, while paisley, poppy, and floral constituted the main palette.
Some highlights include a ’70s-inspired paisley flaired jumpsuit, a blue striped mesh dress, and – my favorite – cutout open-toe booties with socks. One of my blogger friends hated the shoes, but I loved them so much I made sure to snap a closeup. If you’ve ever wondered how to pull off the open-toe-shoes-with-socks look, this is how. Even the crisscross suspenders looked surprisingly chic, though I don’t think I would ever wear them.
One of the first things I noticed at the presentation was the models’ hair, which deviated from the frizzy and sleek hairstyles I’ve seen at other shows. Instead, hair was softly pulled back into a low bun and embellished with two headbands for a romantic look. The makeup was similarly romantic with a subtle smoky eye. Overall, the collection is a contemporary update to the musical influences of the ’70s and ’90s, tailored for the 20-something artist.
