If there’s one trend I will defend to death (not exaggerating in the least) it would have to be the peplum. Here’s why everyone should love it: 1.) It’s dressy without looking overdressed; 2.) creates the illusion of an hourglass figure (who doesn’t want that?); and 3.) most importantly, it’s incredibly versatile. Yet peplum has gotten a lot of flack lately, most recently from the street style aficionados of who are bored of the “done-to-death” trend. While I agree that peplums have been exhaustingly ubiquitous since 2012, I’m not ready to let go of the classic silhouette. Like most trends, this one is best worn in moderation. Scroll down to learn how to refresh your peplum for work, a night out, or a fashion show (who’s ready for NYFW?).
Everyday:
H&M Peplum Top, $29.95
How to style: layer a cropped sweater over the peplum and pair with skinny oxblood pants.
Brunch:
Anthropologie Peplum Jacket, $79.95
If you’re worried about the billowy look of some peplum tops, try a sleek peplum jacket to instantly dress up a casual outfit.
Girls Night Out:
Cameo Long Sleeve Dress, $220
The asymmetrical shape gives this peplum a modern sartorial edginess.
Fashion Show:
Torn By Ronny Kobo Peplum, $169
Looks cool with: leather leggings, trench coat, and white pumps.
Work:
Alice + Olivia Peplum Dress, $264
Perhaps the best example of peplum is the workplace peplum dress. I like that this dress is styled with a giant statement necklace to make the outfit seem less office ordinary.
Be honest, have I convinced you to embrace peplums? Let me know whether or not in the comments.
