Cara Delevingne was the bride of the runway during the Chanel spring 2014 haute couture show on Tuesday. The athletic, futuristic collection, which featured sneakers for every ensemble (including one with knee pads), epitomized Delevingne’s sartorial edginess. As we would expect from her off-duty tomboy style, we saw the model sporting sneakers with her ethereal wedding dress. Leave it to Karl Lagerfeld to make sneakers look chic with a wedding dress.
The youthful collection was a direct contrast to prior Chanel haute couture presentations in which its iconic tweed jacket and skirt suit were predominately displayed. Instead, the latest presentation takes street style to a couture level, with sneakers that cost over $4,000 and that required 30 hours to construct each one (according to Fashionista). Now that Lagerfeld has finally embraced sneakers, we can expect to see them trending this year. I’ve been on a sneaker hiatus for about 4 years and I’m already coveting a pair (Superga, please).
Back to Chanel. Aside from the sneakers, one major theme in the collection was the cropped jacket, completing the youthful, downtown street style motif of the presentation. Here are some of the best looks from the show.
