Five Fashion Trends To Look Forward To In 2014

Happy New Year! One of my New Year’s Resolutions is to (finally) launch a Facebook page for Style Context, so stay tuned for that some time this month. If, like me, you’re stuck inside because of the snow storm, this is the perfect time to reflect on the Spring 2014 fashion shows for what lies ahead this year. I’m curious to see what trends will be in or out. We know that Pantone’s color of the year, Radiant Orchid, will make a ubiquitous presence in every retail store. But will my beloved emerald disappear into oblivion? I hope not. Other trends in the forecast include laser-cuts, prints, pastels, floral, and pleats.

While perforated leather and laser-cuts had a major moment in 2013, this year designers are experimenting with different fabrics, such as lace, and floral shapes (Chloe and Christopher Kane). Expect to see a more delicate and feminine take on last year’s edgy perforated trend.

Graphic Coats

Patterned and printed coats made a minor appearance in the 2013 shows, but this year we can expect designs that are bolder – as in the case of Prada – and quirkier (Miu Miu cat-printed coat, anyone?).  Personally, I cannot wait to try this trend.

Another trend I support is pastels. The sweet motif made a huge appearance during London Fashion Week and Milan Fashion Week proving that mint, rose, and lavender can work as neutrals. Can’t wait for spring? Get the look for winter.

Whimsical Floral

I admit, I’ve been kind of bored with floral, which has been trending for few years now but this whimsical take is anything but banal. That Matthew Williamson jumpsuit looks straight out of the ’70s, I just can’t pass it up.

Pleated Skirts

As someone who already owns a high-waisted pleated skirt (silver, Anna Sui, 2008 sample sale), I’m very much a fan of this trend. It has a flattering silhouette and could easily transition it from spring to fall with boots for a preppy look.
