If there’s one skincare faux pas I wasn’t prepared for as a twenty-something it’s dealing with breakouts at the same time as fine lines. Back in middle school everyone always told me I wouldn’t have to worry about acne past my teens, but that couldn’t have been more wrong. So, what’s the deal? According to Murad, hormone fluctuations and slower cell turnover are to blame for adult acne, requiring a gentler skincare regimen than the harsh products we used in our teens (Neutrogena, I’m looking at you). And unlike teenage acne that tends to reside on the forehead and cheeks, adult acne is mostly located on the jaw line, mouth, and chin. It’s no coincidence these are the areas where I tend to breakout, especially around my t-zone. Over the past couple months I noticed my breakouts skyrocketed around the same time I started drinking milk. These weren’t whiteheads or cystic pimples but red blemishes and a pore-clogged complexion. Needless to say, I was in dire need of a facial.
Lucky for me Murad offered me a complimentary facial at Massage Envy Spa where my esthetician, Cheryl, kindly diagnosed my skin type: oily/blemish prone sensitive skin that was a bit dehydrated. Pretty complex. Cheryl applied a soothing Clarifying Enzyme Acne facial treatment (with extractions) specially designed by Dr. Howard Murad. Even though I’ve had facials in the pasts, none of them compared to the soothing, thorough treatment I received from Massage Envy. Cheryl was really gentle on the extractions and gave me a home care regimen to follow which included a cleanser, toner, serum and moisturizer.
I started using a new anti-aging and acne care line from Murad (given to me for review) to control acne while restoring moisture – perfect for twenty-something blemish-prone skin. I’ve only been using the products for a week but I’ve already seen a decrease in blemishes and a smoother complexion. First I use the Time Release Acne Cleanser, a gentle blend of amino acids and hyaluronic acid that surprisingly removes all of my eye makeup (it won’t burn your eyes!).
After cleansing, I follow up with the Advanced Acne & Wrinkle Reducer, a serum that works to repair breakouts and decrease redness and fine lines. So far I’ve noticed a decrease in breakouts and redness.
The third and final step is a moisturizing. I use the Anti-Aging Moisturizer during the morning and night for hydrate my skin while keeping oil and pores at bay. And since it also contained broad spectrum SPF 30, it also protects my skin from the sun and premature aging. The formula is lightweight and a little goes a long way. As someone who likes face oils, this product comes pretty close to one.
Of course, in addition to getting regular facials and using these treatments you’ll want to drink plenty of water to hydrate your skin from within and limit processed foods and dairy to prevent hormonal breakouts. Want your own Massage Envy facial? Now through August 2 get $10 off a facial treatment and get a complimentary Murad sample. If you pre-book an August appointment in July you’ll get a free Murad skincare kit. Facial treatments include Environmental Shield® Vitamin C, Clarifying Enzyme Acne, Anti-Aging and Sensitive Skin. As I mentioned above, I highly recommend the Clarifying Enzyme Acne facial, which immediately diminished existing blemishes and cleared my pores. For my next visit I’d like to try the Anti-Aging facial to take care some of pesky smile lines. But for now I’ll be sticking to my anti-aging/anti-acne treatments.
